This beautiful two-storey family home underwent a complete joinery reinstatement just under two years ago. We recently paid a visit to see how the new joinery has stood the test of time — and how it continues to complement the character of the home.
When we began the installation in late 2024, the property was in the midst of a complete renovation. Having been a family home for over 30 years, it was full of personal character, history and identity. However, the original windows and doors were beginning to compromise the comfort and security of the house, allowing cold air and draughts to enter while providing limited protection as the area became increasingly popular with tourists and weekend visitors.
The aim was to restore the warmth and character of the property while bringing its performance, comfort and security up to modern standards.
A softer side of Joinery.
Joinery can often be overlooked when it comes to creating a comfortable home. We naturally associate comfort with soft furnishings — cushions, sofas, curtains and carpets — but the right joinery can be just as transformative. Let your bay take centre stage.
This welcoming front room has been beautifully reinstated with a bespoke bay window, crafted from Accoya wood and backed by a 50-year rot guarantee. Accoya is our preferred timber for its exceptional stability, longevity and ability to achieve a beautifully refined finish — making it as enduring as it is elegant.
Our client finished the windows with beautiful off-white gauze half-curtains, hung from antique brass curtain rods to complement the window’s ironmongery, locks and lifters.
Windows made for slowing down.
This sizeable double bedroom features two new front-facing windows, carefully designed to complement the existing brickwork and give the facade a fresh new face. Inside, they bring a softer quality of light and a sense of warmth and comfort to this inviting room.
These double-glazed windows do more than keep the warmth in. They help keep the noise of the street out, while creating a comfortable barrier against the cold, draughts and humidity outside. Traditional joinery methods are honoured through carefully crafted sash boxes and precisely balanced weights, allowing each window to open and close with effortless ease. With a soft-close finish, there’s no rattling or need for force — just smooth, quiet movement and a beautifully considered finish.
The same attention to detail continues throughout the property, with the window treatments creating a sense of cohesion from room to room. Half-curtains offer privacy while allowing the natural light to filter through, while subtle touches of brass echo the sash locks and lifters, bringing warmth and continuity to every window.
Where there’s a will, there’s a window.
This small bathroom window presented a tricky addition, but careful planning allowed it to fit seamlessly within the space. Positioned above the lavatory, between the toilet and shower, the window sits deliberately off-centre to maximise the amount of natural daylight entering the room.
Centring the window would have meant compromising on the available light, while positioning the sill directly above the toilet tiling would have also reduced the light coming in . Instead, every element — from the window position to the sill and surrounding trims — was carefully considered and tailored to work within the space and around planned bathroom works. For a finish that transforms this awkward window opening into a welcome light source.
Face to face with character.
With the front of this wonderful home fully reinstated, we introduced a subtle contrast to the traditional white-finished sash windows and downstairs bay with two off-black doors: a new front door and matching basement entrance.
Both doors share the same four-panel design, creating a sense of continuity across the façade. The basement door features reeded glass within its upper panels, allowing natural light to filter through while maintaining privacy and security.
The front door takes a more understated approach, crafted entirely from timber with four solid panels and a clear fanlight above, which floods the entrance hall with natural light. Finished with polished brass Banham locks and a matching letterbox, the result is striking in its simplicity.
It’s a reminder that beautifully proportioned, expertly crafted joinery doesn’t need excessive door furniture or decorative glass to make an impression.
Good proportions, considered materials and exceptional craftsmanship are more than enough.
